We have listed terms to be familiar with before making a website. It is best and beneficial to be aware of these basics so you are aware of what your agent or developers are talking about and it doesn’t throw you off guard completely.

What is Domain

When a child is born you give them a name as their identity, when you start a company you’ve got to name it. Similarly, to create a website you need a domain name. It is the most crucial and the very first step to take when creating a website. A domain is the reason you’re able to visit your site without it you are non-existent online. Each domain name is unique to a specific website and cannot be shared or duplicated with other web pages. Therefore, Choose a name that is suitable for your company / content. Make sure your name describes what you do.Keep it brief and something that is easy to pronounce and remember. Some top level domains include .com, .org, .edu, .net.

What is Hosting

The next step after choosing your domain would be choosing the hosting and hosting company that will suit your best interest. The easiest way to understand web hosting is to imagine your website as an office building, where each floor is a page of your site. For this building to exist, you’ll need a piece of land to construct it on. On the internet, the land upon which you build your website is known as web hosting. All the files and data that make up your site – think of them as the foundations of the office building –  are stored on web servers that are sent to people who visit your site. The main factors you should take into consideration when choosing a hosting are cost, size, the functions of your site, and which of the four types of hosting you need: free, shared, virtual-dedicated, or dedicated server.

What is a CMS

First off CMS stands for content management system. It is a software which helps users create, manage, modify and publish their digital content on a website. It is typically stored in a database and displayed in a presentation layer based on a set of templates like a website. In simple terms – a tool that helps you build your website without needing to build everything from scratch because CMS  handles all the basic infrastructure for you and you can simply focus more on moving forward with your website.

What is security of a website

Website security primarily means protecting, preventing and responding to cyber threats. Websites and web applications are just as vulnerable to security violations as homes, stores, and government locations. Unfortunately, cybercrime happens every day, and great web security measures are needed to protect websites and web applications from becoming compromised. A common tool used for security is an SSL certificate. Secure Socket Layer is a digital certificate that validates a website’s identity and enables an encrypted connection between a web server and a web browser. Companies need to add SSL certificates to their websites to secure online transactions and keep their customers’ information private and secure. SSL keeps internet connections secure and prevents criminals from reading or modifying information transferred between two systems. When you see a padlock icon next to the URL in the address bar, that means SSL protects the website you are visiting. It’s vital for websites to have an SSL because it keeps the user’s data secure, verifies ownership of the website, and prevents hackers from creating a duplicate site. It simply conveys trust amongst the users. If a website is asking visitors to sign in ,enter personal details – such as their credit card numbers, and view confidential information such as their  financial information, it is essential to keep the data confidential. SSL certificates does just that and helps keep online interactions private, assuring the users that the website is authentic and safe to share private information with.

What is Website Marketing

Promoting a business website in order to bring more traffic to your site is website marketing. These visitors in turn are likely to purchase the businesses service or products. More visitors means more opportunities for potential customers to buy your product. Website marketing also means getting on the first page of your search results. You can do so by firstly putting out great content then you can use tools such as SEO’s to find you better which I will be talking about in depth in my next header.

What is SEO

Search Engine Optimization (SEO) is the process of growing a website so that it performs well in organic search engines like Google, Bing and Yahoo. It refers to the marketing strategies used by businesses in an effort to gain “natural” traffic from search results on search engines. Major search engines such as Google, Yahoo, and Bing use special algorithms to determine the accuracy of a search, making it easy for users to find exactly what they are looking for on the first page of searching.SEO is part of a natural system that webmasters do not have to pay for in order to take a part of it. Rather than an publicity campaign, SEO is a strategy that advertisers can use to keep up with the natural trends of the Internet in order to become more relevant in search results. Becoming more suitable with search results will allow the business to gain more traffic naturally, rather than having to pay for more customers.

High Quality Content

With so much competition in the market and so many websites and services to choose from, visitors automatically expect high quality content. Content that catches the eye, pictures to give them a visual of what the products look like, Set a standard for your company and so on. If you fail to deliver they will most likely never visit you again. Before you launch your website, have at least 3, (preferably 10) content ready to go. 1200 + words per content that way you have higher chances of ranking in the search engines.

Theme and design

In order to build your website you have to choose a theme and design that fits and showcases what your company stands for.You will also need a company logo, branding and content. Therefore, when you’re hiring someone to build the website for you, you’re ready to go in order for a programmer to customise the designs for your website.
